3D printed kayak on water

YouTube maker PrintThatThing has completed a months-long project to 3D print a full-size, functional kayak. The boat is made from 84 interlocking PETG sections, totaling 60kg of filament and over 2,000 hours of print time.

The sections are joined with a combination of mechanical clips and solvent welding, creating a watertight seal. The final kayak is 3.2 meters long and weighs 38kg — heavier than a commercial kayak but fully functional.

After initial pool testing, the kayak has been tested in river rapids up to Class II. The PETG material holds up well to impacts, though UV degradation is a concern for long-term outdoor use.

The full build series and all STL files are available on the PrintThatThing YouTube channel.
